01 / PEOPLE & ABILITIES
Resonators and Resonance Abilities
Resonators are individuals who possess special abilities known as Resonance Abilities. They can be identified by a Tacet Mark, and their abilities differ from person to person.
Yangyang, for example, can read information carried by the Streams in the wind. This allows her to sense disturbances in the environment, including the formation of Tacet Fields.
Rover also bears a Tacet Mark, suggesting that they are a Resonator. However, the nature of their abilities remains unclear.
02 / THREATS
Tacet Discords
Tacet Discords, often shortened to TDs, are dangerous entities encountered throughout the world. They pose a serious threat to people living beyond protected settlements.
Tacet Discords vary in strength. During the Prologue, the group encounters several of them, including an unusually powerful one within a newly formed Tacet Field.
Defeated Tacet Discords can leave behind lingering Reverberations, which can sometimes be collected as Echoes.
03 / PHENOMENA
Tacet Fields and the Etheric Sea
Tacet Fields are dangerous areas associated with the appearance of Tacet Discords.
A newly formed Tacet Field generally enters a Dormant period, during which it is relatively safe. Yangyang explains that the duration of this period depends on how quickly the field forms. Fields with longer Dormant periods tend to produce stronger Tacet Discords.
The Etheric Sea is associated with the disturbance near the Gorges of Spirits. Its influence disrupts the group’s communication devices, while a Tacet Field appears unexpectedly near their meeting point with Baizhi.
The circumstances surrounding this particular field are unusual, and its sudden appearance remains unexplained.
04 / FREQUENCIES
Reverberations and Echoes
According to Yangyang, everything in the world is made up of frequencies, and sounds generate Reverberations.
When Tacet Discords disintegrate, their lingering Reverberations can be converted into Echoes. Resonators can then use these Echoes in battle.
Not every Echo can be absorbed immediately. A Resonator’s Data Bank must be sufficiently advanced to handle the strength of the Tacet Discord it came from.
Rover’s ability to absorb an exceptionally powerful Echo without relying on their Terminal is therefore highly unusual.
05 / TECHNOLOGY
Pangu Terminals
Pangu Terminals are gourd-shaped devices used by Resonators, with functions including communication, gliding, and the collection and management of Echoes through a built-in Data Bank.
Rover possesses a Terminal that looks different from those used by Yangyang and Chixia. Its system version also differs, although its basic functions appear compatible.
The reason for these differences is not yet known.
06 / GUARDIANS
Sentinels and Jué
Sentinels are powerful beings associated with the civilizations they watch over. Huanglong has one capital and six cities, each with its own Sentinel. Jinzhou’s Sentinel, Jué, takes the form of a Loong.
According to historical records mentioned by Yangyang, Huanglong’s Sentinels were once a single entity before becoming responsible for different parts of the region.
Sentinels are rarely seen directly. Most people encounter them only during Appointment Ceremonies, while their Appointed Resonators are permitted closer contact. Jinzhou’s current Appointed Resonator is its Magistrate.
Rover’s apparent memory of standing face-to-face with Jué is particularly unusual, but its meaning remains unknown.
07 / PLACES
Huanglong and Jinzhou
Huanglong is the region in which the Prologue begins. Jinzhou is one of its cities, situated between the Desorock Highland and the Norfall Barrens.
Jinzhou serves as a fortified border city and an important defensive position against Tacet Discord outbreaks. Its protective barrier, fortifications, and Resonance Nexus help safeguard its inhabitants.
The city is governed by Magistrate Jinhsi, who addresses its citizens during the Prologue. Jinzhou is also preparing for the Moon-chasing Festival, an occasion that draws visitors from other places.
08 / HISTORY & LEGEND
The Ancient Account of Pangu
Following Rover’s unusual Echo absorption, Yangyang recalls an ancient passage from the Comprehensive Mirror for Historians.
The account describes a celestial being who descended into the world and absorbed Echoes directly into their body. It associates this being with the ordering of heaven and earth and the beginnings of Huanglong’s history.
Chixia offers a simpler version of the tale: a powerful figure absorbed an extraordinary Tacet Discord without a Terminal and used its Echo to reshape the world.
The account is significant because Rover has just demonstrated a similar ability. However, the Prologue does not establish that the ancient story is literally true or that Rover is connected to the figure it describes. Baizhi explicitly cautions against drawing conclusions without sufficient evidence.
09 / INFRASTRUCTURE
Resonance Beacons and the Resonance Nexus
Resonance Beacons are devices that travellers can register and activate. Chixia explains that the immediate area around a Beacon is usually safer, making them useful during journeys through dangerous territory.
The Resonance Nexus provides broader protection, including for Jinzhou. Together, these systems form part of the infrastructure that helps people travel and live in a world threatened by Tacet Discords.
